Food and Beverage
The global food supply chain demands thorough quality control and high throughput analysis of samples with complex matrices. Dionex focused UHPLC+ covers all aspects from nutritional research and development, to food safety control with optimal data quality. For speed, combined with cost-effective analytical techniques, the UltiMate® 3000 UHPLC+ product range with its broad variety of detection and automation capabilities offers the perfect solution.
Food analysis represents a rich diversity of analytical requirements. Nutrition content analysis is about main components of the foodstuff, whereas the analysis of health beneficial substances such as antioxidants requires a sensitive detection. Taking this further, trace detection capabilites are required to control food contaminants adversely affecting human health. The UltiMate 3000 Standard System and RSLC System are modular, highly flexible platforms idealy suited to address these highly needs.
A good example for a matrix requiring analysis of both health protecting agents and potential health risks is tea. Studies have shown that tea (Camellia sinensis) provides several health benefits, such as reduction of cholesterol and obesity, and protection against cardiovascular disease and cancer. At the same time tea can accumulate plant protection agents or environmental pollutants. These two solutions help understanding both aspects:
- Potential Contaminants: Ultrafast Analysis of Polyaromatic Hydrocarbons with Fluorescence detection
- Health Benefits: Sensitive Analysis of Catechins in Tea by HPLC
The Basic Automated Sytem is ideal for many food and beverage laboratories – it is low cost, rugged, and provides exceptional performance. This is shown in an ultrafast analysis of a soft drinks sample. All analytes are separated in less than 4 minutes. The chromatogram is also an overlay of 68 injections, demonstrating incredible retention time and area precision.

Separation of all analytes in less then 4 minutes
Method Conditions
System Used: UltiMate 3000 Basic Automated System
Flow: 1.2 mL/min
Injection Volume: 20 µL
Temperature: 45°C
Pressure: 515 bar
Column Used: Phenomenex Kinetex® (Phenomenex Inc.)
Particle Size: 2.6 µm
Length: 150 mm
Diameter: 3 mm
The retention time and area precisions obtained for the 68 injections are remarkable – retention time RSDs are 0.12% or less, and the area RSD for the Acesulfame K peak is only 0.15%

Remarkable retention time and area precisions
